10 hashtags for the content and comms industry

Posted on January 19, 2012 by: Fiona Cullinan

Twitter hashtags are great for tracking a set of topic-related tweets and for ensuring that your comments and content are distributed to an interested community. Think of it as adding a subject line to your emails or rounding up lots of different thoughts under one project heading.

For Firehead’s niche area of jobs recruitment – the European content and communication industry – here are some of the recognised hashtags and examples to watch, follow and click on to:

1. #techcomm

For technical communication professionals such as technical writers, authors and editors. While #techcomm is the community’s hashtag of choice, #techcomms is also used, so consider searching for both.

2. #contentstrategy

For content strategists to discuss content strategy issues, share expertise and announce conference dates, such as in the tweet below. A good place for those transitioning into this field to catch up on new thinking.

3. #contentmarketing

4. #socialmedia

This is a general tag for a very large subject so combine it with searches for other hashtags, such as #news or #mobile to hone what you are looking for.

5. #ux

One for user experience professionals; also, check #usability and, for user experience design, #uxd.

10. Conference hashtags

Finally a note on conference hashtags. If you are interested in a certain content or comms conference but can’t attend (or even if you can), following the conference hashtags can help your keep up with the conversation and find interesting links. Here are five that we have followed in the past year:

  • #cmworld – related to Content Marketing World in Cleveland, Ohio.
  • #csapplied – related to Content Strategy Applied in London, UK.
  • #confab – related to Confab conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  • #csforum – related to Content Strategy Forum, help in different locations.
  • #sxswi – related to South By South West Interactive conference in Austin, Texas.
wow, #sxswi isn't until March, but the parties, er, meetups, are starting in January.
