Saving the world with the UN, content strategy and a mission to make the web a better place
I wanted to follow up on my promise to tell you more about my trip to the United Nations in Geneva in February. Gosh, things have been busy since. I went to meet with other professional communicators, to talk about content strategy and to save the world. Here I am, pictured right with some of them inside the UN’s famous General Assembly Hall – you can see more pictures from the Geneva trip here.
I think my mission achieved a modicum of success, if our conversations were anything to go by.
I was invited by a colleague who works at the UN to take a private tour of the grounds in Geneva and a have yummy lunch (before the chocolate fondue, before the macaroons, before the dinner meeting on the lake…) and to talk shop with other professionals interested in communications in international organisations. As a European recruiter in the field of content and communications, I know I certainly am!
There was lots of discussion about how our profession’s skills are put to use for the UN and how communicators can help with the UN vision.
It’s how the content is strategised and implemented that poses the big question.
Of course, we at Firehead think they could all use a good content strategy to save the world – or even, our own contribution, a Bitesize content strategy to save a bit of the world.
I gave an explanation about what content strategy is (and is not) and how it can help a large, international organisation’s communications goals.
The UN employs:
- Technical, financial and scientific communicators
- Web communicators
- Marketing communicators
- Translators
- Interpreters
- Cultural liaison specialists
- …and content strategists by many other names (go figure)
It was amazing to be standing on the grounds at the centre of so much history and international cooperation. And also so inspiring for a communicator to see the elements of our profession put to the use of the good of mankind. Now if we could just get some content strategists in there to sort a few things out…
You know, I’m still an idealist in my heart. I love to see communications used to help people and make the world a better place. The UN gets me all choked up.

Great job, CJ. Communication *does* help people and make the world a better place. Content strategy is the perfect tool for the UN, although it does look like supersized bitesize! I guess it’s “keep calm” and remember that wise cliché – a journey of thousand miles begins with a single step.
